Gift Acceptance & Privacy Policy

The Massachusetts Law Reform Institute (MLRI) is a 501(c) 3 non-profit charitable organization. Gifts to MLRI are tax deductible as allowed by law. The following is intended to provide our donors with guidelines on MLRI's gift acceptance and privacy policy.

Gift Designation

To ensure gifts are properly received by MLRI as intended by the donor, donors should identify the recipient organization as Massachusetts Law Reform Institute.

Cash Gifts

MLRI will accept all cash gifts of money and checks. Unless otherwise specified, all cash gifts will be assigned as "unrestricted" and will provide general operating support for projects and programs identified by MLRI's Executive Director and/or Board of Trustees.

Gifts Made by Credit Card

MLRI will accept all gifts made by a Master Card, Visa or Discover credit card. At this time, donors who wish to make a contribution using a credit card must use Click & Pledge, MLRI's secure, online giving vendor on our Give to MLRI page.

Gifts of Stock

MLRI will accept most gifts of stock, provided that they are readily tradable in a secondary market. All contributions of stock will be sold as soon as possible after they are received. MLRI will provide donors with an acknowledgement letter identifying the stock(s) contributed, the date the contribution was received, and the net proceeds MLRI receives after selling the stock. MLRI reserves the right to respectfully decline any gift of stock that is determined by the Board of Trustees and/or Executive Director as being representative of an organization or industry whose practices are deemed inconsistent with MLRI's mission and values.

Bequests and Planned Gifts

MLRI will accept gifts bequeathed by a donor through his/her will or estate. MLRI will also accept planned gifts, including insurance policies and retirement accounts for the purpose of establishing and strengthening MLRI's endowment. All donors are encouraged to arrange a time to meet and discuss his/her philanthropic objectives with an MLRI staff member prior to making a bequest or planned gift. Individuals interested in making a bequest or planned gift should contact Jamie Gilmore, Director of Development, at 617-357-0700 ext. 345 or via email at jgilmore@mlri.org.

In-Kind Gifts

In-kind donations of goods and/or services will be accepted by MLRI provided they are consistent with the needs and mission of the organization at any given time. While MLRI will provide donors with an acknowledgement letter identifying the good(s) and/or service(s) contributed and the date such contribution was received or provided, MLRI will not assign a monetary value to any in-kind gift. Rather, we ask donors to personally assess the value of their in-kind donations for tax purposes. If you are interested in making an in-kind gift, please contact Jamie Gilmore, Director of Development, at 617-357-0700 ext. 345 or via email at jgilmore@mlri.org.

Gifts of Personal Property and Real Estate

Except in rare instances, MLRI does not accept gifts of personal property (jewelry, art, cars, boats, real estate, etc.) for the purpose of resale. Individuals who wish to inquire about possibly donating a material good for resale purposes should contact Jamie Gilmore, Director of Development, at 617-357-0700 ext. 345 or via email at jgilmore@mlri.org.

Annuities and Trusts

MLRI does not offer any trust or annuity programs.

Acknowledging Donations

MLRI will provide all individuals who contribute a gift as outlined herein with an acknowledgment of their donation. All acknowledgments from MLRI should be kept by donors for personal records and tax purposes, as appropriate.

Privacy Policy and Annual Donor Listing

It is MLRI's policy not to share donor contact information, including email addresses, phone numbers, work or business addresses, with any other individual or organization. However, unless otherwise directed, MLRI may include a list of donors in our annual Advocacy Report or other reports as appropriate. If you do not wish to have your name appear in our annual donor listing, please contact Jamie Gilmore, Director of Development, at 617-357-0700 ext. 345 or via email at jgilmore@mlri.org. Donors who wish to remain anonymous may also indicate so by marking the appropriate box on MLRI's online donation website, contribution form or return envelope.
