Statewide Immigration Coalition Submits Joint Letter in Support of Tuition Equity
The Massachusetts Legislature is considering whether to include tuition equity in the FY24 budget. This measure would extend in-state tuition and access to state financial aid to students in the Commonwealth, regardless of immigration status.
Currently, thousands of MA high school students cannot continue their education due to their immigration status. Despite living in the Commonwealth, these students are required to pay out-of-state tuition for public colleges and are denied financial aid. This policy significantly impacts their ability to access higher education and limits their future contributions to the Massachusetts economy and society.
On Monday, July 10, the Massachusetts Law Reform Institute submitted a joint letter on behalf of the statewide Immigration Coalition (IMCO), urging both the House and Senate to support this vital initiative. MLRI will continue to advocate for tuition equity throughout the budget process, because investing in Massachusetts high school students through the passage of tuition equity is also an investment in the Commonwealth’s future.
