Press Statement for Martin Luther King Jr. Day by Georgia Katsoulomitis and Massachusetts Law Reform Institute (MLRI)
January 2025
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a time for all of us to reflect on Dr. King’s unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and the eradication of poverty. His vision, his dedication and his life’s work drive all of us who fight each day to eliminate poverty, injustice and inequality and to advance racial justice.
Today, as we honor his legacy, we recognize that the struggle he so fiercely championed continues. Too many individuals and families in our Commonwealth and across the nation, still face the compounded burdens of poverty and systemic racism.
At MLRI, we are committed to building a more equitable future, one where access to resources, opportunity, and justice are not determined by the color of one’s skin or their socioeconomic status. Our work is grounded in Dr. King’s principle of justice for all, recognizing that our shared humanity calls us to act, to advocate, and to drive change.
This Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on the same day as the inauguration of our next President. It is imperative that as we embark on this new page in American history, we continue every single day to reaffirm our dedication to the ideals of Dr. King. We will continue to advance policies and initiatives that lift up those who have been historically marginalized. And we call on legislators, community partners, and fellow citizens to join us in this mission, to unite for economic justice, racial equity, and a future where the dream of Dr. King is realized for all. The work continues—together, we are capable of shaping a world without the oppression of poverty and racism – and that work has never been more important than it is today.
